Thanks so much for your kind words and reassurances! I just got an email letting me know there will be remote opportunities for the interns whose positions were cancelled, and even though they’re not what I wanted or as intensive as I was looking forward to, they’ll still be interesting and a way to support the aquarium. I’m feeling a little better and not freaking out as much as I was, at least.
Field work for census starts today!
Lots of walking and trying to ask personal questions in my future.
News story: one in three people have either not shown up to start census work or have quit.
Me: hey, that’s me!
I, uh…officially turned in my equipment today, resigned yesterday. Between my other two jobs, there was no way I’d be able to get the hours they wanted and have any sort of “work/life balance.” At the start of day three of field work I was already beyond stressed.
@Ashburn, don’t feel bad! My retired neighbor started working for the census & is quitting this week because the logistics for what houses she visits are assinine ( her words) and she’s verbally abused at about 85% of the houses she goes to. She’s exhausted & stressed. And that’s only getting in about 4 hours a day!
It’s been non-stop covid for me since about February, and now hurricane season and we’re fielding evacuees but we can’t shelter them en masse because of covid? Let me tell you, I’m having a day.
Ok ok ok. Guess who was told that they’re basically having the best internship their supervisors have ever seen partly because they can pick everything up so quickly? It’s me. I’m that person.
And because of that, they’re having me do an extra, personal project, which I got to choose. I am now officially going to be training the Clark’s Anemonefish in the mangrove habitat to report to a target to eat at mealtimes, to try and reduce the mealtime aggression we’ve seen a lot of. I’m SO excited, animal behavior and training is one of my big interests and I didnt think I’d be able to do it in a professional setting for at least 2 years. Who knows if itll work really, but that’s part of the fun!
That’s awesome!
Congrats!
Very cool, congratulations!
SO cool! Do keep us posted on how it works out!
My regular job’s big boss sent out an email right before the holidays (there was also an in person meeting, but I wasn’t in that day to avoid overtime) that we would have no hours come the new year until maybe late February.
As crappy as that timing was, they were proactive about making sure we had a fallback. The testing folks that’ve been working out of our lobby offered to take us on as extra hands (supposedly they were squeaking by with about a third of the folks they could really use).
Today was my first shift with them. Assignment today was help make sure folks who hadn’t done this version of the test before had a good sample before heading down to turn it in (they’ve switched from swabs to spit test). Lots of running back and forth down the side of the parking garage. I signed up for other positions for the rest of the next couple months, but apparently they could reassign me. Fingers crossed I get to try some of the other things I signed up for!
I legit fell asleep for a few hours after lunch (was a half day).
Oh that exhaustion after work is so relatable!! Every day after lunch I have to force my eyes open to keep working lol.
That sounds like a kinda cool job, too, though!
My new summer job has me doing a lot of work with ornamental plant pests, one of which is thrips, which I figured out today I might be allergic to. I got bit by a bunch of thrips while working in the field today because they’re nasty little monsters and then a bunch of small rash spots showed up on both of my arms and hands, which is incredibly inconvenient. I ordered some UV protective sleeves from amazon which should help keep them off my skin.
Definitely let us know how those work out!
I had two job interviews yesterday, preliminary question sessions with agents at a staffing agency.
So tomorrow I start my trial run as secretary for two lawyers.
Keeping it on the dl with fam and irl friends. But considering I’ve been jobless for over a year…
Put in my job application to work at my local bookstore for the rest of the summer- fingers crossed!

And…my coworkers aren’t?
I mean, maybe my feedback matches better with the opinions of those she’s making the scrub caps for?
Got an email today from a rep with a staffing agency who was excited to see we graduated from the same high school. I didn’t recognize her name so I looked her up. She turned out to be a big track star from the area where I grew up.
Who graduated six years after I did
Am I old now?
Two weeks into my trial run and I feel like I’m messing up more often than not.
One of the clients had the same last name as some of my ancestors.
