Holding the good thought for you!
Crossing fingers!
I got the job!!
Wooooooo!!!
I’m joining a team of web developers as a troublespotter.
Essentially making sure that everything works and looks good, and flagging everything that’s not to the rest of the developers to fix.
After a few months I’ll know how to solve most of the issues myself, and they’ll continue to train and teach me more and more and more.
I never thought I’d be happy getting a 9-5pm job, but here I am, absolutely ecstatic.
So for me, I am studying at CEGEP, it is a type of school in Québec (Canada) between what I believe you call High school and college. I am doing a double DEC in social sciences and natural sciences. I have still two years before I go to University. I don’t have a job on the moment, I’m focusimg on my studies.
It’s exam time here which means that I don’t have classes but have to be in school. Deskwarming here we come.
Unfortunately people can see my computer screen and so I have to at least look like I’m busy. So far I’ve read two novels and gotten all the prep for the next three weeks just about done OTL
At least when I deskwarm during vacation nobody’s there to judge me for watching movies or anything, but everyone else is in the office!
Howdy!
I’m a merchant sailor professionally working on cruise ships and cargo barges and I’m a fire station leader on board, but I’ve been many things. I hope to one day become a game warden. I love the outdoors, especially woods and water, and keeping people from ruining the woods or poaching sounds worthwhile.
I used to be an office manager for an allergy and asthma clinic. But, that was terrible. After six years, I finally got out. Now, I’m starting up my own flower farm while working part-time editing videos for a local university. I also do Freelance writing for a tabletop gaming company. But, I can’t super go into detail about what’s in the pipeline–or my bosses will hunt me down.
@Ginger you’re speaking to my heart. I was a teacher at a sheltered workshop with special needs adults for 5 years. For many, we were the only “family” they had left. My students taught me much more than I ever taught them. Where else can you walk in the door to work and have people tell you you are beautiful and you’re their best friend? Every Day! I had to leave that position when they discontinued the program but went to work at a Community Action Agency and started a gardening and nutrition program geared toward the elderly and people with special needs. I built raised bed gardens on legs so that the were accessible for everyone and one of the first places I took one was to my friends at the sheltered work shop. So we’ve been together in some form or fashion for 15 years now.
Scientist here! I have my MSc in molecular biology but ended up in the analytical chemistry area. So far I have worked in a brewery, and in a commercial lab testing honey and just recently gained the manager position for the team. Helping people grow their abilities is super rewarding, but so is getting in and finding answers by using amazing bits of technology. And the constant learning.
It’s funny how many of us with a bio background wound up in chemistry. I wound up in environmental and eventually nuclear with a micro degree.
Oh my goodness yes. I think about 80% of people I work with at the moment are biologists by degree. It’s also incredibly female dominated which is interesting. So many of the skills are transferable though so it’s just whether you are willing to change mindset a little bit and learn something a bit new
I too am a biologist working in a chemistry laboratory.
I think there’s only one person in my lab at the moment who’s actually a chemist by degree and that’s my line manager
I just started a new job, grading papers for a company that does professional development courses. I love it, but it’s also a source of much nervousness about my actual ability to functionally adult. Also, I keep seeing punctuation and grammar errors that make me wonder if I’m having a stroke. But some papers are really good too, so mixed bags.
Pharmacist here, working for one of the big retail chains. My dream, however, is to open a board game cafe with my husband some day. Probably way down the line because $$$ lol. I’ve moved twice over the last 2 years and that’s really put a damper on my progression in the company. And the market is so saturated with pharmacists I barely get hours sometimes. It’s actually an exhausting job =/ thankfully, I’ve just moved somewhere that breaks are mandated lol. Looking forward to being able to eat lunch on my 8-12 hour days XD
Completely forgot to talk about a pretty neat work experience I had lately!
So I want to go into the Airforce after I complete school (2 years) to be a PJ (pararescuemen!) Reason I decided upon that job is 1)It’s mainly search and rescue, which I have thoroughly enjoyed as a civilian medic. 2) I’d be technically considered a special operations service member (aka a cool guy) 3) It simply looks hard as hell, and who doesn’t want a good challenge?
Now to the actual work story! My boss actually found out that a few of PJ’s were coming to our part of the state for a conference. He managed to talk them into flying in early and taking me for some training in the heli. So I got to fly with three PJ’s, two crew chiefs, and the two pilots! The PJ’s actually said I was a “helluva lot better” than they were expecting me to be. So now I have some friends in the career field I want to go into!
That’s so cool! I hope you succeed in becoming one!
Thought I’d come and resurrect this topic a little bit because I got offered an interview for an internship at the New England Aquarium and I’m beyond excited but massively nervous! Particularly because they want me to come in to interview in person–and take a tour of the gallery, which is amazing and incredibly cool–but I’m still going to be in school and out of state at the time they asked me to come in! I think it should work out just fine, I go on spring break soon so I’ll probably be able to interview then.
More than anything I’m just excited because this positions is radically cool! The gallery position I applied for includes everything from a shark and ray touch tank to a shorebirds exhibit to jellies to juvenile sharks! Plus it also encompasses the center where ambassador animals are kept for educational shows. This kind of work is something I’m super interested in but it’s somewhat difficult to get work in this field as someone with no formal biology education beyond AP work in high school, so I’m ecstatic I made it past the first round of interviews!
I really hope they don’t mind me interviewing online or later than they initially thought…
This is only tangentially about work, but mostly about “you people” (us).
I normally work from home outside Washington, DC, but go into the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. People often bake on the weekend, which means I always miss the cookies.
Except for today. There were a few cookies left over. Which means people saved them for me.
Seahorse/hippocampus cookies.
I know you guys like to reach out to new recruits and stuff, but this is ridiculous.
