Another variation that would have the same answer and might be slightly more grammatically correct would be “metal fixing pins to bolt”. As in, you bolt things together with rivets. Doesn’t change much, but might add a little weight to the rivet–>five theory?

Yeah, looking at it in the light of day, I’m not sure about 22. There’s clearly some substitution going on with the F’s, and I really want the answer to turn into 5, but I can’t guarantee that theory is good.

If we’re looking for other ways of ciphering, I’m convinced that I or IN might be good letters to check. And I’m not sure about X, but also can’t think of a consistent substitution that would get rid of it.

I’m the same way. 22 looks so weird and I want it to be 5. I wish we knew what the unscrambled sentence was. I’m going to keep trying.

Now to stare at it until it makes sense…
